- Cotyledons elongated spoon shaped.
- Entire leaves, deeply indented.
- Height: 30-100 cm.
- Stem entirely leafy, continuously spinous-winged.
- Lower leaves in rosette. Stem's leaves are winged all along the stem. Leaves more or less white and tomentose underneath.
- Flowers purplish rarely white in ovoid elongated capitulum, grouped or isolated. Involucre slightly hairy, composed of scales. Bracts of involucre narrow elongated, terminated by spine. 15-22 flowers in capitulum, detached easily at maturity.
- Fruits : fawn coloured and shiny achenes.
- Plant sometimes used as a decorative plant. Fodder plant if it cut young and dry. Flowers contain nectar.
