- Cotyledons elliptic or ovate, with rounded tip, more or less stalked.
- Leaves entire, deeply indentate.
- Height: 50-100 cm.
- Stem erect, branched in its upper reproductive part, wingless,almost glabrous.
-Basal leaves in rosette; leaves elliptical, sessile, with a blade cottony beneath and sparcely hairy above and green. Upper leaves dentate, oblong, pinnatifid, with lanceolate very spiny margins, hairy as the basal leaves.
- Flowers purplish in corymb. Unisexual heads (plant almost never dioecious). Involucre ovoid and glabrous.
- Fruits: achenes with pappus spread abroad with the wind.
- Risk of confusion with Carduus pycnocephalus L., Carduus tenuiflorus Curtis, Cirsium vulgare (L.) Scop.
- Biological type: Perennial with creeping regenerative root system.
