- Basal leaves in rosette, rest alternate. All prickly edged and undulating dentate, lanceolate.
- Flowers in subsessile capitulum, the one at the top superseded by the branched axillaries.
- Fruit approx. 2mm and pappus approx. 6 mm.
- Risk of confusion with : Carduus tenuiflorus , Carlina corymbosa et Cirsium arvense in rosette.
