- Cotyledons elliptical-oblong, obtuse or with rounded tip, attenuate at base and glabrous.
- Leaves alternate, oblong-lanceolate, glabrous or rarely arachnoid.
- Height : 10-80 cm.
- Stem underground, rhizomatous and aerial erect, almost glabrous or narrow. Arachnoid-tomentose.
- Basal leaves in rosette, others alternate. All prickly edged, dentate or pinnatipartite and oblong-lanceolate or ovoid.
- Flowers in capitulum, pedunculate, composed of one corymbose inflorescence.
- Fruit about 2.5 mm with pappus about 8mm.
- Risk of confusion with: Carduus tenuiflorus , Carlina racemosa et Cirsium arvense in rosette.
