- Cotyledons elliptic, tip rounded, more or less petiolated.
- Leaves entire, ovate or triangular, irregularly dentate.
- Height: 20-80 cm.
- Stem generally strongly fluted, branched (branches horizontal very long, partly decumbent).
- Young leaves mealy, generally glaucous, later green on each side, rhomboid, lanceolate, base acuminate. Two teeth at the base of lower leaves. Early development of cotyledon buds.
- Flowers greenish in terminal diffuse inflorescences. Glomerules gathered in pseudo-spikes interrupted without leaves. Bracts slightly hastate, smooth or slightly pickly.
- Refreshing plant, high level of soda in the ashes.
- Presence of triazine resistant populations in Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Germany.
- Risk of confusion with Chenopodium ficifolium Sm., Chenopodium album L., Atriplex prostrata DC.
