- Cotyledons elliptic or ovate, rounded tip, more or less stalked.
- Leaves entire, lanceolate, more or less dentate.
- Height: 20-80 cm.
- Stem red, erect-prostrate, branched.
- Leaves lanceolate, alternate, olive-greenish, tapered into a short petiole, maximal width at the half of the blade. Blade black-blotched. Sparsely hairy just on veins and margins of the blade. Ciliate ochreas.
- Flowers pink, rarely whitish, in spike long, dense, erect, short and rounded at the apex. 6 stamens and 2-3 styles.
- Fruit : smooth, sometimes 3-angled, sometimes flattened.
- Populations exist which are resistant to triazines in France and Holland. Seeds used as food for poultry. Leaves used for dyeing linen into a yellow-reddish colour. Plant detersive, astringent and vulnerary.

Mistake with: Polygonum hydropiper , Polygonum lapathifolium , Polygonum amphibium (at seedling stage).
