- Cotyledons elliptic or ovate, rounded tip, more or less stalked.
- Leaves entire, lanceolate, more or less dentate.
- Height: 30-90 cm.
- Stem erect or ascending, branched, sometimes reddish.
- Leaves elongate-lanceolate, regularly attenuate at the base and at the tip, regularly black-dotted, with a peppery taste. Prominent veins, transparent and dotted, glandular. Ochreas nearly glabrous, long-haired.
- Flowers greenish-white, sometimes pink, in long slender spikes, interrupted, somewhat arcuate-hanging. Bracteoles naked. Perianth segments covered with glandular dots.
- Fruit : 2-3 mm, sometimes 3-angled and sometimes biconvex flattened, dull, minutely rugose.
- Plant poisonous. Seeds can be used as a substitute of pepper, the juice of flowers was used against gout.
- Risk of confusion with Polygonum lapathifolium L., Polygonum persicaria L.
