- Plant propagates overall vegetatively (rhizomes...); establishment from seedling is rare.
- Height: 30-100 cm.
- Stem: erect or ascending, simple or branched, glabrous or hairy with appressed hairs, rooting at nodes.
- Leaves sessile or stalked, light-green, nearly whitish beneath. Blade firm, oblong, narrowed into a petiole, prominent midvein. Petiole above the half part of the ciliate leaf sheath (ochrea ). Red rhizome.
- Flowers pink, in dense terminal spike on stem or branches, eglandular sepals. Stamens long exceeding the calyx -teeth.
- Fruit black-brown, shining, ovate and flattened.
- Plant used as diuretic. No flowering except in water.
- Biological type: perennial with rhizomes.
Mistake with: Polygonum persicaria (at seedling stage).
