- Cotyledons elliptic to ovate, rounded tip, more or less stalked.
- Leaves sagittate or cordate.
- Height: 20-100 cm, slender, leaves alternate, prostrate or climbing. Plant with a slender principal root.
- Leaves cordate-sagittate, tapered into a point at the apex. Prominent veins beneath. Sheath leaf short and truncate: the ochreae.
- Flowers whitish, in loose raceme.
- Fruit 3-angled, black. Seeds black, enclosed in the brown residue of the perianth.
- Plant of which seeds are used as groats for feeding birds. Populations exist which are resistant to triazines in Austria, Germany and Netherlands.
