- Shoot folded, leaf sheath flattened.
- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than broad, leaf glabrous.
- Ligule membranous, truncate, auricles absent.
- Height: 5-30 m. Plant tufted. Plant very variable in forms.
- Leaf with a dull, sometimes shining blade, glabrous, smooth with 2 parallel furrows near the midvein. Hooded tip. Parallel-margined blade, tapered into a beak. Sheath glabrous, flattened and keeled.
- Inflorescence with branches always erect. Spikelets 1-2 mm broad, distant, and not overlapping the rhachis,(the terminal floret is at most 1.5 times as long as its pedicel ). Floret with anthers less than 0.5 mm, lengthened and ovoid panicle.
- Rare in crops.
