- Shoot folded, leaf sheath flattened.

- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than wide, leaf glabrous.

- Ligule membranous, truncate, auricles absent.

- Height: 5-30 cm. Plant tufted. Very variable in forms.

- Leaf with a dull sometimes shining blade, glabrous, smooth with 2 parallel furrows near the midvein. Hooded tip. Parallel-margined blade contracted into a beak. Sheath glabrous, flattened and keeled.

- Inflorescence in a pyramidal panicle, sometimes unilateral with spreading or deflexed branches. Spikelets small, many-flowered. Floral glumes awnless, 5-veined, sparsely hairy.

- Populations exist which are resistant to triazines in France, Switzerland, Germany, Great-Britain, Belgium, Holland, Japan, Austria, Czechoslovakie, U.S.A. Some populations are resistant to paraquat in Great-Britain.
