- Cotyledons very narrow and short (few mm long).
- Leaves entire, elliptic to ovate, entire-margined.
- Height: 30-60 cm. Plant very variable.
- Stem stiffly hairy, branched.
- Leaves: basal in rosette. Later leaves pinnately divided, dull-green, cut and toothed. Cauline leaves few, sessile, with a terminal elongate segment. Whitish latex.
- Flower red-scarlet, large, solitary, terminal. Sepals : 2 falling at flowering.
- Fruit : capsule short, glabrous, obovate, rounded at base. 10-rayed disk at the tip of the fruit.
- Plant poisonous, especially the fruit. Petals used in tranquillizing and sudorific infusion.
- Risk of confusion with Papaver dubium L., Papaver hybridum L. (before flowering).
