- Cotyledons very narrow and short (few mm long).
- First Leaves linear or rounded, then pinnate.
- Height: 20-60 cm. Plant hairy, very variable.
- Stem erect, branched, with hairs appressed above and erect below, stalked, pinnately cut with linear, lanceolate and 1-2-toothed segments. Cauline leaves sessile with an obscure terminal segment. Whitish latex.
- Flowers dull-red, relatively large. Anthers purple.
- Fruit : clavated capsule, glabrous, many times longer than broad. Flat and 4-9-rayed disk on the tip of the fruit. Seeds small, reniform, fall by pores situated beneath the disk which crowns the capsule.
- Whole plant poisonous - especially the fruit.
- Risk of confusion with Papaver rhoeas L., Papaver hybridum L. (before flowering).
