- Cotyledons very narrow and short (few mm long).
- First leaves linear or rounded, then pinnate.
- Height: 15-60 cm.
- Stem erect, branched, stiffly hairy.
- Leaves: lower in rosette, grass-green. Leaves once or twice pinnately cut, with lanceolate -linear segments, cauline leaves sessile. Whitish latex.
- Flower red to purple, relatively small, solitary, terminal or axillary, on long hairy peduncles. Petals bright wine-red, black-blotched at base. Sepals very bristly hairy.
- Fruit : capsule ovate to rounded, covered with stiff bristles. 5-8 rayed disk at the tip of the fruit. Seeds grey-brown, reniform, deeply reticulate.
- Whole plant poisonous - especially the fruit.
- Risk of confusion with Papaver rhoeas L., Papaver dubium L. (before flowering).
