- Shoot folded at first then rolled, sheath flattened.
- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than broad, leaf glabrous.
- Ligule membranous truncate, auricles elongate and crossed.
- Height: 15-60 cm. Plant tufted, glabrous.
- Stem: erect or at first prostrate then ascending.
- Leaves shiny beneath, smooth, flat, 2-6 mm broad, lengthened, acute. Sheaths slightly swollen, especially that of the upper leaf.
- Inflorescence : spike slender, stiff and erect or slightly bent in the upper part, spikelets lanceolate, somewhat spreading from the axis of the spike during flowering. 3-9 florets in each spikelet with lower flowering glumes 6-8 mm long and awnless. Glume slightly shorter than the whole of flowering glumes.
- Fruit : a caryopsis with its flowering glumes, straight rachilla broadened at the apex. Awn short or absent.
- Populations exist which are resistant to triazines in Israel and in Australia, to diclofopmethyl and aminotriazole in Australia.
- Risk of confusion with Lolium perenne L., Poa trivialis L. (at the seedling stage).
