- Shoot folded, sheath flattened.
- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than broad, leaf glabrous.
- Ligule membranous truncate, auricles elongate and crossed.
- Height: 10-70 cm. Plant tufted, glabrous, (culms always present).
- Stem: smooth even below the spike. Auricles present glabrous but very short, with marked veins, and sheaths red-crimson at the base.
- Leaves dark-green, shiny and glabrous beneath, furrowed above.
- Inflorescence : spike flexuous-peduncled, axis smooth. Spikelet in distichous order, its narrow part edgeways on to the axis.
- Fruit : caryopsis enclosed in flowering glumes, with a straight rachilla adnate to the palea.
- Plant very cultivated in meadows and lawns. Populations exist which are resistant to paraquat in Great-Britain.
- Risk of confusion with Lolium rigidum Gaud.
