- Cotyledons auriculate.
- Leaves entire, rounded, with distal teeth.
- Height: 10-30 cm. Plant pubescent.
- Stems diffuse, ascending, tuft-like branched, often red-purple-tinted.
- Leaves opposite, rounded to cordate, long-stalked, crenate. Numerous veins, reticulate. Upper leaves short-stalked and often red-tinted near the inflorescence, closed in a pyramide.
- Flowers crimson, 6-10 in 3-7 pseudo-whorls distal then very closed et the end of the stem. Flowers markedly 2-lipped with a upper lip of 3.5 mm, downy and inflated in semi-sphere and a longer lower lip.
- Fruit : achene 2-2.5 mm, usually grey and smooth, scarcely minutely wrinkled.
- Plant melliferous, astringent, vulnerary, used against catarrh and scrofulas. Plant foetid.
- Risk of confusion with Lamium hybridum Vill. (has dentate bracts ), Lamium amplexicaule L. (has sessile bracts).
