- Cotyledons auriculate.
- Leaves entire, rounded, with distal teeth.
- Height: 5-30 cm.
- Stem spreading then erect, tuft-like branched, glabrous below and downy above, leafless below the flowers.
- Leaves lower opposite, stalked; the upper orbicular, sessile reniform, deeply lobed and amplexicaule. Leaves ovate, rounded. Few veins not very interconnected.
- Flowers crimson, relatively small, in distal terminal whorls. Flowers helmet-shaped, with a upper lip entire-margined and with dense purplish hairs, a lower lip with 2 acute lateral lobes and a median larger and notched lobe.
- Fruit : achene, 3 mm, ovate-elongate, with small white warts.
- Plant melliferous at the end of the winter and during the spring.
- Risk of confusion with Lamium purpureum L., Lamium hybridum Vill. (which are different by their not having amplexicaul bracts ).
