- Cotyledons auriculate.
- Leaves entire, rounded, with distal teeth.
- Height: 10-30 cm.
- Stem erect, ascending, relatively robust, branched near the base, leafless below the flowers.
- Leaves rounded, long-stalked and irregularly incised-dentate. Floral leaves deltoid, obtuse, closed.
- Flowers crimson 4-8 in whorls. Calyx pubescent, with subequal lobes, apiculate, toothed, 6-8 mm long. Corolla 2-lipped, 8-12 mm long, with usually a hairy tube, the upper lip helmet-shaped and the lower lip 3-lobed with a median lobe larger than the lateral ones.
- Fruit : achene smooth, circa 2 mm long.
- Risk of confusion with Lamium purpureum L. (which has crenate bracts ), Lamium amplexicaule L. (which has amplexicaul bracts).
