- Cotyledons elongate, spoonlike.
- Leaves entire, ovate or deltoid, irregularly dentate.
- Height: 40-120 cm.
- Stem often branched, erect, glabrous or stiffly hairy below, spike -like above.
- Leaves alternate, blue-green, erect, spiny on margins and on the underside of the main veins, sessile, amplexicaule, pinnatifid. Whitish latex.
- Inflorescence 10 mm broad in numerous racemes. Involucral bracts on several rows, blue-green, often violet-tipped, glabrous. Flowers ligulate, light-yellow and few.
- Fruit : achene grey-black, elliptic, 3-4 mm, 5-9 ribs, with a beak and a pappus of 2 rows of simple hairs.
- Populations exist which are resistant to sulfonylureas in U.S.A.
- Risk of confusion with Chondrilla juncea L., Lactuca virosa L. (which is differentiated by the spreading and glandular leaves and by the broad and black fruit).
