- Cotyledons elliptic or ovate, more or less stalked.
- Leaves entire, ovate or triangular, irregularly dentate.
- Height: 30-130 cm. Plant glabrous, hispid on its base.
- Stem glabrous with slender and spreading branches, covered with bristle hairs curved in the lower part.
- Basal leaves in rosette ; leaves runcinate or sinuate disappear after flowering. The upper ones linear and entire dentate on each margin, the median vein bristle-haired.
- Flowers yellow sparsely developed in small broad heads, 2 or 4 arranged on very short branches; involucre with outer bracts very small, the lower ones slender and elongate.
- Fruits : achenes brown when mature,finely grooved in their lower part. At the upper part several rows of scales, the upper one with 5 spiny teeth, in the middle there is a beak with the white pappus. Seeds : 8-9 mm. A serious weed in the Australian wheat belt where classical biological control measures have been used.
- Plants eaten as salad when young and good for rabbits. Plant which stimulates the appetite.
