- Cotyledons elongate, spoonlike.

- Leaves entire, ovate or deltoid, irregularly dentate.

- Height: 60-150 cm.

- Stem stout, hispid, usually purplish at the base, prickly.

- Leaves sessile, amplexicaule, with a horizontally spreading blade, toothed or sinuate, scarcely lobed, prickly on margins and main vein beneath. Whitish latex.

- Flowers yellow in glabrous heads with lanceolate bracts.

- Fruit : achene with thickened borders, hairless or few-hairy at the tip of the ovate part of the fruit. Presence of a white pappus. Fruits black slightly purplish when ripe.

- The dried latex of the stem is hypnotic.

- Risk of confusion with Lactuca serriola L. (which is differentiated by the cauline leaves exposed to the sun and held vertically in the north-south plane, glabrous above and by the narrower and paler fruit).

- Biological type: Biennial.
