- Cotyledons reniform.
- Leaves entire, rounded, with distal teeth.
- Height: 10-50 cm.
- Stem prostrate or ascending, few branched, with hairs sometimes erect, long, very thin, smooth and sometimes short, but often glandular above.
- Leaves lower in rosette. Lower cauline leaves opposite, upper alternate, palmately divided. The upper sessile rounded in outline but lobed. Lobes entire on the first leaves and 3-lobed in the later leaves. Stipules reddish, deltoid and hairy at the base of the petiole.
- Flowers purplish or pink small, mostly on 2-flowered peduncle, gathered in a big tendrilled inflorescence. Sepals acute, mucronate (less than 1 cm). Petals longer than the sepals, cordate, emarginate, ciliate on the unguis.
- Fruit : with valves, transversely wrinkled, glabrous ; slightly downy sutures and beak.
- Plant with a smell of Indian ink.
- Risk of confusion with Geranium rotundifolium L. and Geranium pusillum L.
