Biological type: Perennial with tubers
- Plant propagates vegetatively (tubers....); establishment from seedling is rare.
- Shoot folded, 3-angled in section.
- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than wide, leaf glabrous.
- Ligule absent, auricles absent.
- Height: 20-40cm.
- Stem 3-angled. Rhizomes filiform tuber -ended. Tubers blackish, striped, bitter, 20 to 40 cm long.
- Leaves glaucescent beneath, narrow (2-6 mm). Ochreas present.
- Flowers in dark red-brown spikelets, 1-2 cm long, 3 stamens. Ovary long-styled, 3 stigmas. Inflorescence with a long, acute, basal bract.
- Fruits : achenes 3-angled, as long as the 1/2 length of the scale.
- Rare in crops in Northern Europe. One of the most injurious plant species in the world. In warm countries, a real scourge for all crops. Tubers are used against disorders of stomach, of lungs, of vesica, and in the composition of the scorpion oil and theriacal water.
