- Plant propagates vegetatively by rhizomes ; establishment from seedling is exceptional.
- Shoot plicate, triangular section.
- Lamina 20-50 times longer than large, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule membranous truncated, auricles absent.
- Height: 10-70 cm.
- Stem erect, triangular. Underground stem creeping rhizome.
- Leaves with elongated lamina, flat, 3-6 mm wide, covered by small hairs, leaf sheath glabrous. Presence of ochreas.
- White-greenish flowers, grouped in spike. Male spikes slender, 2 or 3 at top of stem. Female spikes 2-3, pistillate, oblong and thicker, short peduncles.Bracts long, similar to leaves, form long sheaths at base and edge of inflorescence.
- Fruits with reddish-green envelope, ovoid, weakly flattened on dorsal face, attenuated by elongated beak, lengthwise distinct veins and strigose hairs.
