- Shoot folded, 3-angled in section.
- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than wide, leaf glabrous.
- Ligule absent, auricles absent.
- Height: 20-60cm. Plant glabrous.
- Stem 3-angled. Rhizomes elongate, tuberous in some places.
- Leaves linear (4-8 mm broad), keeled. Ochreas present.
- Inflorescence : umbel shorter than 2-4 leaves; spikelets ginger-gold, 6-12 mm, spreading in spike -like racemes ; scales laxly imbricate, 3 stamens, 3 stigmas. Scales obtuse, no whitish margin.
- Fruits : achenes 3-angled 1/2 shorter than the scale.
- Plant cultivated for the tubers, big brown striped, with a floury, sweet flesh. Rare in crops but frequency increasing.
- Risk of confusion at seedling stage with Cyperus rotundus and Carex hirta .
