- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath cylindrical.

- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than broad, leaves more or less pubescent.

- Ligule membranous, dentate, auricles absent.

- Height: 60-150 cm. Plant cespitose.

- Stem erect.

- Lower leaves wide and pubescent ( 3-5 mm), blade margin regularly ciliate.

- Inflorescence : flowers green and reddish, in spread diffuse panicle erect or sparcely bent. Spikelets horizontal or lax, 30-40 mm long 3 or 4 flowered. Glumes very much longer than the lemma. Inflorescence more or less unilateral; no shedding of the flowers.

- Fruits : caryopsis with pubescent very long awned lemma ; the caryopsis of the same spikelet do not separate.

- Risk of confusion with Avena fatua L., Avena sterilis subsp. ludoviciana (Durieu) Nyman.

- Biological type: annual.
