- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath cylindrical.
- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than broad, leaves glabrous.
- Ligule membranous, dentate, auricles absent.
- Height: 30-150 cm. Plant cespitose.
- Stem erect.
- Leaf blades wide, flat, elongate and acuminate.
- Inflorescence : flowers green and reddish, in spread diffuse panicle erect or sparcely bent. Spiklets 2 cm long, 2 or 3-flo- wered.
- Fruits : caryopsis with pubescent very long awned lemma ; the caryopsis of the same spikelet do not separate.
- Risk of confusion with Avena fatua L., Avena sterilis subsp. sterilis L.
