- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than broad, leaves more or less pubescent.

- Ligule membranous, dentate, auricles absent.

- Stem erect.

- Leaf blades flat, wide, acuminate, dark-green, 10-45 cm long, margin and keel with rare hairs.

- Inflorescence diffuse, panicle, pyramidal, green. Spikelets bent or horizontal, 20-25 cm long 2 or 3-flowerered. Glumes veined, always longer than the lemma. Two or three lemmas aristate

-Fruits : caryopsis with pubescent lemma. At maturity, the caryopsis of a spikelet separate.

- Presence of diclofopmethyl resistant populations in South Africa and Australia.

- Risk of confusion with Avena sterilis subsp. sterilis L., Avena sterilis subsp. ludoviciana (Durieu) Nyman.
