-Stem filiform and very branched.

-Leaves opposite or alternate without petiole, lamina filiform, blunt and mucronate ; sheath free, formed by 2 fused stipules.

-Flowers unisexual (plants monoecious ), isolated or in group, male without perianth with one stamen and the female with perianth, sessile or pedicellate.

-Fruits : achenes flattened on top, beak curved, crenate -toothed ; sometimes in group of 4.

-Aquatic, submerged.

- Biological type : perennial with rhizomes.
