-Cotyledons not visible (hypogeal germination).
-Leaves diverse, composite, pinnate.
-Height : 20-80 cm. Plant climbing, hairy.
-Stem branched, angular.
-Leaves paripinnate with 5-9 pairs of linear leaflets (10-25 mm long, 1.5-6 mm wide). Tip of leaflet rounded; tendrils robust and branched, stipules with entire, dentate margin.
-Flowers purple, generally black at the top (18-20 mm), grouped in raceme of 2-12 flowers, very long or almost as long as the corresponding leaf.
-Fruits : hairy pods, all or few have brown dorsal vein (25-40 x 8-11 mm), cultivated for forage.
- Biological type : annual.
Mistake with: Vicia villosa and other species of genus Vicia at flowering.
