-Cotyledons entire, rounded and club-shaped.
-Leaves entire, lanceolate and club-shaped, dentate with large soft grooves and long spines.
-Height : 20-80 cm. Plant erect, robust,more or less hairy.
-Stem solitary, branched with the margin of the leaves protracted with gaps along the length of the stem.
-Leaves: at the long, petiolate, oblanceolate, soft, pinnatipartite or runcinate and slightly prickly; cauline leaves, sessile, oblong -linear, ovate, pinnatifid, prickly, thick with white margin.
-Flowers yellow in terminal capitulum and short peduncle, within leaf axils, exceeded by the upper prickly leaves.
-Fruit flat with pappus with few rigid hairs.
-Plant cultivated in certain regions (especially in Spain) for the yellow roots, adventitious buds and the tender stalk of the leaves which can be used in cooking. Plant diuretic.
