- Shoot rolled, triangular in section.
- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than broad, leaves glabrous.
- Ligule membranous truncate, auricles absent.
- Height: 40-120 cm.
- Stem trigonous.
- Leaves glabrous clasping the stem with sheath ; blade longer or equal than the stem, 3 to 9 mm broad, flat with a keel beneath, slightly scabred on the margin and acuminate at the tip.
- Flowers with reddish scales and pale margins with 2 teeth on each side of a long acumen. Ovary surrounded by a style with 2 or 3 stigma. Spikelets ovoid -oblong (1-2 cm long), sometimes with unequal simple peduncle.
- Fruits brownish, big, triangular, surrounded by 3 or 6 hairs denticulate retrorse shorter than the fruit.
- Plant with underground stem astringent. Rare in crops.
