- Cotyledons elliptic or ovate, rounded tip, more or less stalked.
- Leaves entire, elliptic or ovate, more or less dentate.
- Height: 50-150 cm.
- Stem stout, erect, branched near the apex, with short and erect branches.
- Lower leaves in rosette, dark-green. Leaves with an undulate blade, more or less crisped on margins; lower ovate-elongate, acute apex and attenuate or truncate at base. Leaves with a long channelled stalk, often twice rolled like a cigar on their underside and enclosed in a membranous and whitish sheath (ochrea ).
- Flowers greenish or reddish; many-flowered, closed whorls usually leafless, later lengthening into a dense panicle. Peduncle jointed near the lower 1/4 of its length.
- Fruit with 3 appressed sepals, cordate entire or dentate at base, with unequal tubercles, usually 1 developed and ovoid.
- Plant with an aperitive, diuretic and slightly astringent root.
- Biological type: perennial with rhizomes.
Mistake with: Rumex acetosa (at seedling stage).
