- Cotyledons elliptic or ovate, rounded tip, more or less stalked.
- Leaves entire, elliptic or ovate, more or less toothed.
- Height: 30-100 cm.
- Stem erect, simple, slender, branched near the apex, with erect branches.
- Lower leaves in rosette, dark-green, hastate, firm, thick, ovate-oblong, entire; blade lengthening into 2 acute, slightly forward and centreward-directed lobes, with not very marked veins ; long and channelled stalk. Upper leaves lanceolate, amplexicaul ; sheath (ochrea ) lengthened, toothed-cut or laciniate.
- Flowers reddish, small in loose long panicle, leafless. Plant dioecious.
- Fruit with fruiting and membranous valves, suborbicular, cordate, entire with a small scale.
- Plant eaten by cattle before flowering, sometimes cultivated as ornamental plant. Plant aperitive and refreshing. Rare in crops.
