- Leaf sheath cut near the base.

- Leaf blade flat 50-60 times longer than broad, slightly scabrous.

- Ligule obtuse, 4-8 mm long.

- Tillers erect or ascending. Internodes the lowest thickened tuber -like.

- Leaves with a sheath usually scabrous, the upper sometimes swollen, and partially enclosing the panicle.

- Inflorescence : dense panicle often with 2 small deciduous bracts blue to red.

- Spikelets fertile: 6-9 falling from panicle when mature. Glumes veined, acuminate and awned. Wings of glume entire or dentate with a terminal and very marked tooth.

- Fruit : caryopsis.

- Risk of confusion with Phalaris paradoxa L.

- Biological type: perennial.
