- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath terete.
- Leaf blade 2-5 times longer than broad, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule membranous, dentate, auricles absent, basal tufts of hairs on each side of the leaf blade.
- Height: 10-40 cm.
- Culms ascending, hairy nodes.
- Leaves linear, keeled at the base, with a blade slightly joined at the apex. Sheath ciliate.
- Inflorescence : spikelets ovoid, acute, 3 mm long, usually arranged in 2 or 3 spikes. Spikes narrow and short (2-3 mm x 20-40 mm), dense, light-green, blotched at flowering; stamens and stigmas black.
- Risk of confusion with Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.
