- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath terete.
- Leaf blade 2-5 times longer than broad, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule membranous, ciliate, surrounded with a ring of hairs, no auricles.
- Height: 40-120 cm. Plant hairy.
- Stem erect, stout, nearly smooth, with numerous tillers usually near the first stem.
- Leaves 15-30 mm broad, very long (45 cm), ciliate at base and hairy on both sides, with stiff- and long-haired sheath. Blade hairy and long-ciliate at base, broad and short. Long and dense hairiness. Sheath hairy and terete, not tinged and not striped with pink.
- Inflorescence : panicle lengthened, bent at tip, green, with long and erect peduncles. Two sterile floral glumes. Spikelets relatively big (4-5 mm), oblong, acute.
- Plant cultivated and very important in Africa. The straw is used for brooms, seeds are eaten by poultry and birds. Frequency increasing in crops.
- Risk of confusion with Panicum capillare L., Panicum gattingeri (before flowering).
