- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath terete.
- Leaf blade 2-5 times longer than wide, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule surrounded with a ring of hairs, auricles absent.
- Height: 20-80 cm. Plant tufted, hairy.
- Stem erect, hairy with numerous tillers usually near the first stem.
- Leaves narrow and long. Long and dense hairs on the nodes. Leaves hairy on both sides, ciliate at the base, 15mm x 20-25 cm. Median vein, whitish, obscure. Long and dense hairiness. Sheath hairy, terete, often pink-tinged or -striped.
- Inflorescence green or purplish. Long spreading and erect panicle. Spikelets oblong, small (2-2.5 mm). A single sterile floral glume.
- Cultivated as horticultural plant. Native of North America and introduced in Europe. Populations exist which are resistant to triazines in U.S.A. and Canada.
- Risk of confusion with Panicum miliaceum L., Panicum gattingeri (before flowering).
