- Cotyledons elliptic to ovate, rounded tip, more or less stalked.
- First leaf rounded, short-pointed apex; the later 3-foliolate.
- Height: 10-40 cm.
- Upper leaves often with leaflets broader than those of lower and median leaves, toothed above. Blades of leaflets very hairy. Stipules usually deeply cut or toothed.
- Flowers yellow solitary or 2-6 on flowering branches longer than the leaf. This branch is ended with a slender segment turned into an acute awn and flowerless. Standard longer than the keel, keel exceeding the wings.
- Fruit indehiscent, glandular -hairy, in a helix of 3-6 turns, and outer border thickened and rounded, furrowless, veins slightly prominent on the sides. Hooked spines, 1 mm long, on the border.
- Rare in crops.
- Risk of confusion with very hairy species and with species of Medicago with divided stipules ( Medicago truncatula Gaertner).
