- Cotyledons elliptic to ovate, rounded tip, more or less stalked.

- First leaf rounded, shortly acute at the apex; the later 3-foliolate.

- Height: 5-40 cm. Plant covered with short hairs.

- Stem angular, spreading or ascending.

- Leaflets toothed above, leaflets of the upper and median leaves often truncate at the apex, the lower cordate. Blade of leaflets very hairy, more or less silvery. Stipules entire, shortly toothed.

- Flowers yellow isolated or in 2-6 on a flowering branch ended with a little awn flowerless. Standard longer than the keel and keel longer than the wings.

- Fruit : hairy pod, somewhat globose, in a spiral of 4-5 turns surrounded by numerous erect hooked spines. Fruit indehiscent.

- Good melliferous plant.

- Risk of confusion with hairy species and with species of Medicago having entire or toothed stipules ( Medicago lupulina L.).

- Biological type: annual.
