- Leaves with short stalk and very narrow wings; one pair of lanceolate narrow leaflets ; lower leaves awned, the upper with a branched tendril.

- Flowers whitish, red or reddish, 5-14 mm, isolated, short-peduncled.

- Fruit : pod elliptic narrow, 20-35 x 5-9 mm, straight. Seeds trapezoid, red-brown or grey-brown, blotched or concolorous.

- Plant used in the past as fodder or for its edible seeds similar to lentils.

- Risk of confusion with Lathyrus angulatus L., Lathyrus annuus L.
