- Cotyledons invisible (hypogeal germination).
- Leaves pinnately divided.
- Height: 40-150 cm. Plant glabrous.
- Stem climbing, angular in its lower part and winged in the upper part.
- Leaves with 2 lengthened leaflets, acute and with prominent veins. Stipules hastate, shorter than the petiole. Tendril branched.
- Flowers yellow, 10-14 mm, solitary or in pairs on branches shorter than the leaf. Stipules very filiform. Calyx subequal-5-toothed, all teeth as long as the calyx-tube.
- Fruit : pod glabrous, narrow-furrowed on the back, tawny when ripe; seeds angular.
- Risk of confusion with Lathyrus cicera .
