- Shoot rolled, sheath terete.
- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than broad, leaf glabrous.
- Ligule membranous truncate, auricles elongate and crossed.
- Height: 40-120 cm. Plant tufted, glabrous.
- Stem: stout, erect or ascending.
- Leaves light-green, slightly rough, flat, lengthened and acute.
- Inflorescence : spike 20-50 cm long, erect, of numerous spikelets lanceolate, erect-spreading during the flowering. 3-10 green florets in each spikelet. Lower flowering glumes often with an awn of same length. Glume up to 1/3-1/2 of the whole of the flowering glumes.
- Fruit : seed turgid with an elliptical caryopsis less than 3 times longer than broad.
- Rare in crops. Plant toxic, poisonous in flour when the seeds crushed with wheat.
- Risk of confusion with Lolium multiflorum Lam., Lolium rigidum Gaud.
