- Cotyledons spatulate.
- Leaves entire, deeply notched.
- Height: 10-40 cm.
- Stems usually prostrate or ascending, branched up to 100 cm.
- Leaves lower in rosette and opposite, later alternate. Leaves ovate rather hastate, entire-margined, hairy, deep-green to grey-green, short-stalked. Dense hairiness on the leaves.
- Flowers light-yellow, 8-11 mm, solitary, axillary. Upper lip purple, lower lip dark-yellow, straight spur. Peduncle much longer than the calyx and glabrous. Calyx hairy with lanceolate lobes.
- Fruit : globose capsule, 5 mm, roundish, opening by the lid. Seed alveolate.
- Plant vulnerary, purgative, astringent, emollient, discutient.
- Risk of confusion with Kickxia spuria (L.) Dumort. (which is differentiated by the upper leaves not being hastate, rounded and cordate at the base and by the hairy pedicels ).
