- Cotyledons elliptic to ovate, clavated tip, more or less stalked.
- Leaves entire, ovate or deltoid, irregularly dentate.
- Height: 10-40 cm. Plant glabrous with a tap-root.
- Stem erect, few-branched, green, bearing scale -like bracts.
- Leaves all in rosette, glabrous or ciliate, pinnatifid, with acute lobes.
- Florets yellow, small in relatively acute head. Involucre (less than 1 cm) with hairless bracts. Inner bracts about as long as the flowers. Florets about equalling the involucre.
- Fruit : achenes crowned with a pappus; central achenes with a beak and outer unbeaked.
- Leaves and flowers are used against lung disorders.
- Rare in crops.
- Risk of confusion with Hypochoeris radicata L.
