- Leaves striped in violet at base, crenate with clearer central vein, margins undulate.
- Height : 80-200 cm.
- Culm: vigorous, geniculate at base, then erect.
- Leaves : with compressed-bisharp sheaths, sometimes reddened or dark; blade 10-40x10-20 mm, flat, lanceolate, glabrous ; margin rough when rubbed downwards; ligule and auricles absent; sometimes with 1-2 patent hairs 2 up to 4 mm at the base of the blade (however this character is rather unstable).
- Inflorescence : 10-40 cm, sometimes purplish, formed by dense pendulous racemes arranged along a curved axis (especially at maturation), spikelets subsessile or pedicellate 2-flowered, the lower sterile or male, the upper hermaphrodite ; lower glume glabrous or slightly hairy only in the central part; lemma sterile with 2 rows of cilia on each side, usually without cilia along the central venation in the lower 2/3; awn 5-10 mm.
- Fruit : big, elliptic caryopsis.
- Risk of confusion with: other species of the same genus such as E. crus-galli .
- Biological type : annual.
