- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath flattened.
- Leaf blade 2-5 times longer than broad, leaf glabrous
- Ligule absent, auricles absent.
- Height: 30-80cm. Plant tufted.
- Stem geniculate, ascending or erect, branched near the base.
- Leaves : glabrous, broad, often red-tinged.
- Inflorescence : lax panicle, green or purplish, of erect or spreading spikes, angular rachis, pubescent spikelets (2 mm), glumes and flowering-glumes mucronate, awnless.
- Fruit : caryopsis completly enclosed in its 2 flowering glumes, surrounded on its back with the upper herbaceous glume and on its ventral side with 3 pieces: the sterile membraneous rachis, the sterile lemma and the lower glume.
- Rare in crops.
- Risk of confusion with Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beau.
