- Leaves : 2-4 mm, short and thin; sheaths and blade glabrous, usually dark; ligules without cilia or hairs; auricles absent.

- Inflorescence : simple or compound umbel of dense capitula, 1-1.5 cm in diam. with 3-8 short or subsessile stalks; spikelets 10-15-flowered, 3-8 cm; glumes greenish often black-veined.

- Fruit : nut pale yellow or yellowish-green.

- Risk of confusion with: Cyperus serotinus Rottb.

- Biological type : annual.
