- Cotyledons obovate, sessile.
- Leaves alternate, the first ones entire the other dentate, prickly.
- Height: 30-50cm.
- Stems erect, pubescent, sparsely branched.
- Basal leaves in rosette, elongate, with broad-tipped blade, dentate or deeply divided, with acute segments and teeth, hairy.
- Flowers yellow in long-stalked capitule. Involucre with membranous bracts, covered with stiff and black hairs. The flowering stems are leafless.
- Fruits : achenes of 2 kinds, the outer ones with a round back and winged, the inner slender, spindle-like and smooth (4 cm).
- Risk of confusion at seedling stage with Cichorium intybus and the other species of Crepis .
